How Diet Culture Steals Joy and How to Reclaim It This Summer
As summer approaches, so does the flood of diet culture messaging. Ads and social media posts scream about “getting beach body ready” or “shredding for summer,” promoting the harmful belief that our bodies must look a certain way to be worthy of enjoying the season. Diet culture doesn’t just harm our bodies; it steals our joy, damages our body image, and pulls us away from the things that truly matter in life.
This summer, let’s divest from diet culture and embrace a weight-inclusive, body-acceptance approach that celebrates all bodies and focuses on joy, connection, and well-being.
How Diet Culture Negatively Impacts Body Image and Enjoying Life
1. It Fuels Body Dissatisfaction
Diet culture promotes that thinner is better and equates body size with worth, health, and happiness. This messaging creates constant pressure to change our bodies, leading to dissatisfaction and self-criticism. Instead of appreciating what our bodies can do, and in other ways, we’re taught to focus on what we think they lack.
2. It Creates Fear Around Food
Diet culture frames food as a moral issue, labelling it as “good” or “bad.” This can lead to guilt or shame around eating, especially during summer when social events often revolve around food. Instead of enjoying ice cream on a hot day or sharing a meal with friends, diet culture makes us hyper-focused on calories or “clean eating.”
3. It Distracts from Life’s Joys
The mental and emotional energy spent worrying about weight or appearance takes us away from the things that truly matter: spending time with loved ones, making memories, and enjoying the season. Diet culture keeps us in a cycle of self-doubt, preventing us from fully engaging in life.
4. It Excludes and Marginalizes
Diet culture is inherently ableist, fatphobic, and exclusionary. It promotes a narrow and unrealistic standard of beauty that excludes most people, especially those in larger bodies, neurodivergent individuals with sensory eating differences, or those with chronic illnesses. This messaging perpetuates stigma and reinforces the harmful idea that only certain bodies are worthy of joy and acceptance.
How to Combat Diet Culture and Embrace Body Acceptance This Summer
1. Reframe What a “Summer Body” Means
A summer body is simply the body you already have. There is no need to change or shrink it to enjoy the season. Remind yourself that your body is worthy of love, care, and celebration exactly as it is.
Affirmation: “My body is already summer-ready because it exists. I deserve joy and comfort, no matter my size.”
2. Challenge Harmful Messaging
When you see ads or posts promoting diet culture, pause and reflect. Ask yourself:
Who benefits from me feeling bad about my body?
How can I reject this message and focus on what truly matters to me?
Unfollow social media accounts that make you feel unworthy and instead follow weight-inclusive, body-positive creators who inspire self-acceptance.
3. Focus on What Brings You Joy
Summer is about so much more than how you look. Shift your focus to activities that bring you joy and connection:
Spend time outdoors, soaking in the sun and fresh air.
Try a new hobby or revisit old ones that make you happy.
Connect with loved ones through meaningful experiences.
Ask yourself: How can I make this summer memorable for the things I do, not how I look?
4. Reclaim Food as Nourishment and Joy
Food is more than just fuel; it provides connection, culture, and pleasure. Let go of food rules and permit yourself to enjoy all foods without guilt. Whether it’s a popsicle on a hot day or a barbecue with friends, allow yourself to fully savour the experience.
Tip for Neurodivergent Folks: If sensory eating differences make summer foods challenging, that’s okay! Focus on foods that feel safe and enjoyable for you. Your way of nourishing your body is valid.
5. Wear What Makes You Comfortable
Prioritize comfort and confidence instead of worrying about how your body looks in summer clothes. Whether it’s a bikini, a flowy dress, or shorts and a T-shirt, wear what makes you feel good. Your body deserves to feel the sun and breeze, regardless of size or shape.
6. Practice Gratitude for Your Body
Your body does so much for you every day; it deserves kindness and care. Practice gratitude by focusing on what your body allows you to do, rather than how it looks.
Examples:
“I’m grateful for my eyes, which allow me to experience nature and read.”
“I’m thankful for my hands that let me create and connect.”
7. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Spend time with people who celebrate you for who you are, not how you look. Set boundaries with those who promote diet culture or make negative comments about bodies. You deserve to be in spaces that affirm your worth.
